Meet Frank W. Johnson

Frank W. Johnson is a proud native of South Memphis, having grown up in the Cleaborn Homes, South Parkway, Lauderdale (Lauderdale Sub), and Alcy/Ball communities. He attended Norris Elementary, Corry Jr. High, and Overton High School, laying the foundation for his lifelong commitment to his community.

Throughout his career, Johnson has been actively involved in numerous organizations across Memphis. He was a dedicated member of the Shelby County Democratic Party (SCDP), serving on the Primary Board and being elected to the Grassroots Council in 2017, representing the Executive Committee for Shelby County District 10. As a community organizer for The Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) during Karl Dean's gubernatorial campaign in 2018, he demonstrated his commitment to political activism and educational equity. Johnson's dedication to education is further highlighted by his service as a second, third, and fourth-grade teacher at LaRose Elementary. His passion for student advancement also led him to become a board member of Memphis Artists for Change (MAC), where he continues to serve in a volunteer capacity.

His interest in Environmental Justice was sparked during his teaching years, as he noticed recurring health and behavioral issues among his students, which mirrored those of his friends and family. This realization drove him to join the Memphis Water Collaborative, where he uncovered the city's history of contamination problems, particularly in older neighborhoods. He strongly believes these environmental issues are interconnected with Memphis's broader health, educational, and crime challenges.

Frank's commitment to improving his community is evident through his previous roles as President of the Alcy/Ball Community Association and South Memphis Connector for the Center For Transforming Communities. He also served as the Executive Director of Depot Communities United (DCU), working tirelessly to uplift his community.

In October 2022, Frank was appointed to the Memphis Shelby County School Board to represent District 7. His tenure on the board has been marked by a vigorous advocacy for school cleanliness, including efforts to secure better contractors to ensure well-maintained schools. His dedication to creating a conducive learning environment is a testament to his proactive approach. Johnson has also observed the devastating impact of homelessness on families within his district.

He recognizes that homelessness severely disrupts children's mental well-being, making it difficult for them to focus and learn. In response, he has partnered with the Seed department to develop initiatives aimed at reducing homelessness. With several schools in his district ranking among the top five for poverty rates in Memphis, he understands the urgent need for stable living conditions to support effective learning.

Moreover, Frank has been a staunch advocate for Career and Technical Education (CCTE) in Memphis schools, particularly in District 7. He understands that not every student aspires to attend college but believes that every child deserves the opportunity to lead a successful and fulfilling life. By implementing CCTE programs, students can acquire practical skills and trades that prepare them for immediate entry into the workforce upon graduation.

This initiative is crucial for providing alternative pathways to success, helping students discover their strengths and interests outside the traditional college route. Through CCTE, students gain the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in various industries, contributing to their personal growth and the economic development of the community.   Frank W. Johnson's lifelong dedication to service, education, and community improvement underscores his commitment to making Memphis a better place for all its residents.
